Peppermint: Side Effects For Pregnant & Nursing Mummies
Peppermint: Side Effects For Pregnant & Nursing Mummies

Peppermint is used for the common cold, cough, inflammation of the mouth and throat, sinus infections, and respiratory infections. It is also used for digestive problems including heartburn, nausea, vomiting, morning sickness, irritable bowel syndrome, cramps of the upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts, upset stomach, diarrhoea, bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine, and gas.

Though some evidence suggests that peppermint may help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion. But despite promising research, there is no clear-cut evidence to support its use for other health conditions. In most adults, the small doses of peppermint oil contained in dietary supplements and skin preparations appear to be safe. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, however, should avoid such products because little is known about their safety during pregnancy and lactation. Here are some side effects of peppermint and why pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid it.

SIDE EFFECTS

MISCARRIAGE

Peppermint candy and peppermint tea contain small amounts of peppermint, but likely not enough to become a problem. Though there is no scientific evidence to show a link of peppermint tea with miscarriage. But women with a history of miscarriages should abstain from consuming peppermint tea. However the use of pure peppermint oil is not recommended during pregnancy because of the link between the oil and the risk of miscarriage. Peppermint oil can also trigger menstruation, the shedding of the lining in a woman’s uterus. This is dangerous for a woman who is already pregnant. It is also potentially toxic when used or inhaled in large doses. Speak with your doctor if you have concerns about anything in your diet, or avoid anything containing peppermint until you deliver if it helps ease your miscarriage worries. Moreover, lactating mothers should also not consume peppermint tea during breastfeeding, as it can have harmful effects on your babies and it also may cause a reduction in milk supply.

ADVERSE INTERACTION WITH MEDICATION

Sometimes, peppermint has a negative impact when it interacts with other medications as it may inhibit the body’s ability to metabolise the drugs and increase the risk of side effects. During pregnancy, you need to consume prenatal vitamins and other medications, according to your gynaecologist. So get requisite advice from your health consultant before consuming or using peppermint products.

INDUCES ALLERGY

Peppermint oil can cause an allergic reaction if you are allergic to peppermint or menthol, which can be dangerous if the reaction is severe and you are pregnant. Peppermint oil can also cause you to feel flushed and can make heartburn and stomach ulcers worse if you are already suffering from those symptoms.
